IAS Sonal Goel Takes a Stand Against Plastic Pollution and Advocates for a Sustainable Environment

In line with the Government of India's theme for World Environment Day, 2023, which emphasizes the importance of saying no to single-use plastic, IAS Officer Sonal Goel recently conducted an enlightening livestream session on "Minimising Plastic Pollution and Promoting a Sustainable Environment." With her unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and her determination to inspire change, Sonal Goel is leading the charge in raising awareness among citizens and encouraging responsible actions to tackle plastic pollution.


Sonal Goel, known for her exceptional work in environmental conservation, has been actively involved in promoting sustainable practices. On World Environment Day, she initiated a sapling distribution drive, spreading the message of environmental conservation and appealing to every citizen to contribute by planting at least one sapling. By emphasizing the significance of individual efforts, Sonal Goel aims to encourage a collective sense of responsibility towards safeguarding the environment.


Recognizing her expertise in the field, Sonal Goel was invited as a panelist on the popular news channel CNBC Awaaz, where she participated in a talk show discussing the reduction of single-use plastic in daily life. During the discussion, she shed light on the Tripura Bamboo bottles as an innovative alternative and stressed the need for behaviour change to practice sustainability in our day-to-day lives. Sonal Goel advocated for using cloth or jute bags instead of plastic, citing them as examples of sustainable choices that can make a significant impact.


During the livestream session, Sonal Goel highlighted the ongoing "LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment)" mission introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. This mission aims to engage people in tackling the negative impacts of climate change and encourages sustainable practices for a better future. Sonal Goel emphasized the importance of aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the environment and urged citizens to actively participate in achieving these goals.


With her remarkable contributions to environmental conservation, Sonal Goel has demonstrated her dedication to creating a cleaner and greener society. Her efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission have led to significant achievements in cleanliness and sanitation, resulting in Faridabad being recognized as the 'Fastest Moving City at the National Level' in the 'Swachh Survekshan' by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, in May 2017. Furthermore, her leadership as CEO of the Agartala Municipal Council earned the city the BEST BSUP City Award in 2012 and national recognition for the Solar City Project and Green City Project in 2016.


Sonal Goel extends her advocacy for sustainable practices beyond livestream sessions and engages with the public through her social media pages. By sharing some of the best practices suggested by the UN Environment Programme, she encourages consumers and citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits and contribute to the global efforts to #BeatPlasticPollution.
