“There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing.”

Swami Vivekananda

These words have always stayed with me, a powerful reminder that true progress can only happen when women stand as equal partners in shaping our world. As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, I find myself reflecting on the strides we’ve made—and the journey that still lies ahead.

The International Women’s Day event by UNPKFC and UNA-USA in Bangkok brought together global leaders, policymakers, and changemakers to share insights and solutions. Receiving the Empowerment & Development Woman Award was not just an honor but a reaffirmation of the ongoing mission to uplift women. Every effort, no matter how small, creates ripples of change.

The vision of gender equality is deeply embedded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—from SDG 5 on Gender Equality to SDG 3 on Health, SDG 4 on Education, and SDG 8 on Economic Growth. Empowering women is not just about one goal—it is the golden thread that binds the journey toward a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. When women rise, the world rises with them.

A Global Gathering with a Purpose

Bangkok set the stage for a powerful dialogue on women's empowerment, bringing together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and leaders committed to breaking barriers. The theme—"Accelerate Actions: For ALL Women and Girls"—emphasized the need for real, lasting change through policies, networks, and leadership.

Amidst these discussions, the creation of the Lord Shrimant Ganpati Bappa Devalai Temple in Phuket, inspired by Pune’s Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple, stood as a symbol of deepening cultural ties between India and Thailand. This act of cultural exchange exemplifies the shared heritage that has long existed between the two nations, whose histories are steeped in mutual respect and influence. From ancient trade routes to religious and philosophical exchanges, India and Thailand have fostered a relationship built on unity in diversity—each contributing to the other’s rich traditions while maintaining distinct identities.

The temple’s creation is a celebration not only of India’s vibrant spiritual legacy but also of Thailand’s openness to embrace and honor this heritage. Such moments highlight the importance of recognizing our common humanity and shared cultural values, even as we celebrate our diverse backgrounds. This unity in diversity underscores the importance of honoring shared heritage while striving for a more inclusive and empowered world.

Breaking Barriers, Building the Future

Sharing the stage with woman achievers, leaders, and change makers, I felt the pulse of hope in the room—the quiet strength in the eyes of young girls, the unwavering resolve in the expressions of fellow leaders. This was not just a speech; it was a promise—to keep pushing forward until no woman is left behind, no dream is dismissed, and no voice is unheard.

While receiving the award, the discussion emphasized a fundamental truth: when women lead, societies prosper. Their progress uplifts entire communities, creating transformative change that benefits everyone.Providing women with opportunities doesn’t just empower individuals—it drives collective growth and strengthens the fabric of society. But while we celebrate progress, the reality is sobering:

  • Only 26% of parliamentary seats worldwide are held by women.

  • Less than 10% of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs.

  • Women still earn 20% less than men for the same work.

  • Amidst the challenges, stories of resilience and transformation continue to inspire change.

  • India’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have empowered millions of women with financial independence, fostering entrepreneurship and strengthening community leadership.

  • Similarly, women-led leadership during the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the effectiveness of female representation in decision-making, with countries like New Zealand, Germany, and Taiwan setting remarkable examples.

  • At the UNPKFC UNA-USA International Women’s Day celebration, discussions on crimes against women reinforced the urgency for action. While progress is being made, millions still face violence and inequality, making collective efforts crucial.

True change happens when women are not just included but lead—shaping policies, driving progress, and ensuring a future where leadership knows no gender.

The Power of Women’s Networks & Collective Action

One of my biggest takeaways from this event was the strength of women supporting women. Time and again, history has shown us that when women uplift each other, entire generations succeed. At UNPKFC, we explored key strategies to strengthen women’s leadership:

Creating mentorship circles – Every woman in leadership should mentor another, ensuring knowledge and opportunities are passed forward.

Investing in women-led businesses – The future of economic growth lies in the hands of women entrepreneurs.

Advocating for leadership quotas – Representation in politics, corporate boards, and governance must go beyond tokenism.

Engaging male allies – Gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue; it’s a collective responsibility.

Change doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when we stand together, support one another, and take collective action.

The Moment of Compassion at Din Daeng Elderly Service Center

The UNPKFC UNA-USA donation drive at the Din Daeng Elderly Service Center was a deeply moving experience. Warm smiles and gratitude filled the air, each face reflecting resilience and wisdom. As part of the initiative, fitness and health equipment were donated to help support the elderly in maintaining their physical well-being. This act of kindness resonated deeply, offering them not just resources, but also a renewed sense of independence and strength.

True service is measured in the hands you lift, the burdens you ease, and the hope you restore.

Bringing the spirit of Seva (selfless service) to an international platform was fulfilling, reinforcing that true service is about care, respect, and inclusion for those who have given so much to society. The donation of these fitness resources symbolized more than just a contribution; it was a commitment to ensuring that every generation has access to the tools they need to lead healthier, more empowered lives.

A Celebration of Culture and Unity

As the evening began, the Young Peace Ambassadors of UNPKFC took the stage, their voices uniting in We Are the World, We Are the Children. Their heartfelt performance echoed hope, unity, and a shared vision for a better future. In a room filled with changemakers, the message was clear—cultural expression and collective action go hand in hand in shaping a more inclusive and empowered world.

As the sun set over Bangkok, Siam Fantasy transformed into a vibrant cultural spectacle. Thai dance, elaborate costumes, and rhythmic music reflected the rich artistic heritage of India and Thailand, showcasing the power of cultural exchange and the deep bonds between the two nations.

A Personal Reflection: The Road Ahead

These more than 16 years of working across regions like Tripura and Haryana have reinforced the urgent need for women’s empowerment. This vision led to initiatives like Nandini and Mhari Lado—focused on protecting and uplifting women and girls through education, healthcare, and social welfare.

Efforts such as establishing crèches, training ASHA workers to combat domestic violence, launching self-reliance programs, and setting up all-women polling booths have created lasting impact. When women are empowered, they don’t just transform their own lives—they drive change in families and communities. This recognition reaffirms the commitment to ensuring every woman has the opportunity to lead and thrive.

Conclusion

The most rewarding moments came after the stage—interacting with young women, students, and professionals who shared their aspirations and determination to create change. These conversations reinforced a powerful truth: International Women’s Day is not just about celebration; it is a call to action.

The road to gender equality is built on resilience, solidarity, and relentless progress. Change happens when we uplift those around us, turn empathy into action, and commit to breaking barriers—no matter how small the step.

To every woman—your strength is your power. Your dreams are valid. You don’t need permission to lead; you are meant to lead. And to every advocate for equality, change does not happen in isolation. It thrives when we stand together.

Let’s ensure that every woman in every corner of the world has the opportunity to rise, thrive, and lead. Because when women rise, the world rises with them.
